Caminando por Guayaquil

Walking along Guayaquil parks we found a few birds. Most of them couldn't be pictured, they were either too far or too fast :(

Anyway, on this post I'll show you some of the guys we found, please click to enlarge the pics and sorry for the poor quality...

First one, this guy hiding in a HUGE ficus, grabbing a seed that he dropped later on...

... then he went seeking for more...

... he stopped right in front of us (we were on a bridge, trying to get as close as possible), and with our max possible zoom this is what we got...

We continued walking and found this other guy, some kind of heron? I have no idea, I'm such a begginer with just one small guide for my local city! hahaha... Totally clueless but hopefully not for long ;)

At the 'Parque Histórico' we found some colourful guys that will be posted soon. For now I'll leave you with these (also trying to id them!)

Most of this post's pics are kind of a 'Where's Waldo?' game, trying to find the bird or birds in a small bad pic (click to enlarge), like the following... Can you find the two birdies here?

This guy was huge! Couldn't get any closer pics, we were WAY DOWN in the ground, anyone can guess what it is??? HELP!

And finally these fellows, in the 'Jardines del Malecón' (Gardens of the Malecon)

See you in the next post! Have to go now, family is waiting to have lunch!

I think this is in Ecuador. I use the books "Birds of Northern South America" by Robin Restall for this (awesome books).

The first looks like a Blue-gray Tanager.

ave1. is a heron. looks like a juvenile Striated Heron or Green Heron. According to the book they the juveniles of those species are very hard to identify.

The big one might be a raptor. At least the barred tail looks like the tail of many raptor species I know.

Hi Mel,
Sorry I can't help much with your bird IDs, but picture #4 does look like a Green Heron. I'll check back to see what other IDs people come up with for you.

Hallo Markus! Hi Ruthie!

Markus, I think you are right with Blue-gray Tanager id, I searched for it and it is the closest one. I also found out it was 'introduced' in Lima some time ago, although I don't recall seen it EVER!

Ruthie and Markus, I wasn't that bad after all, I knew it was some kind of heron, hehehe, I looked for both your ids, but can't really tell for sure what it is, it does seem more like a Green Heron, but apparently that species doesn't go that far south... I found a sub-species that is found in South America, but it has grey on the sides of the head, nothing like this brownish-redish on the cheeks, white belly and part of the chest...

Let's wait for other comments and see if someone can help us with it! :)

Hi Me.-I don't know much about the birds of Peru but I think the best way to learn is by going out to see birds, taking detailed notes, and checking field guides.-If you need identification by photos you can send them to the bird identification section of birdforum.-It may take you a while to learn how to use the site but they will almost always have an answer for you.

Hola Larry, thanks for the information!
I do try to take notes, I can't buy field guides, they are way too expensive for me now over here, I'll check the forum ;)

Hi Mel, Your rufous-orange bird on the ground is a Pale-legged Hornero, common on the west coast of SA. The bird above it looks like a yellow-crowned Night Heron.
