Anniversary Sunflowers

On July 23rd my parents celebrated their 32nd anniversary.

My mother got flowers from some of dad's friends at the office. They were a mix, but the ones that mom liked the most were the sunflowers. She took them out and put them somewhere else in the house, in a special place for her.

I like sunflowers too, they are such 'happy' flowers, especially in Lima's grey winter.

The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant native to the Americas. The stem of the flower can grow as high as 3 metres tall, with the flower head reaching up to 30 cm in diameter with the "large" seeds.

What is usually called the flower is actually a head of lots of florets (small flowers) crowded together. Amazing.

Many indigenous American peoples used the sunflower as the symbol of the sun deity, including the Aztecas (Aztecs) and the Otomi of Mexico, and the Incas in Peru and some other parts of South America.

To grow well, sunflowers need full sun; not exactly the best time for them here...

Too bad I can't plant them in the garden, I wonder how many new beautiful birds they would attract.

There are lots and lots of birds who love sunflower seeds.
The birds here spread them everywhere, so I get sunflowers growing in odd places: pots, the mulch..... : )

I forget that you are in winter now....

Oh! We had some volunteer sunflowers grow in the yard that were about two feet across. They were awesome!

Hi Mel, we get lots of sunflowers here too in summer (but not many birds so that's why I haven't been posting much, no pictures you see).

You mentioned Aperture on my blog. Wow-so you have an applestore, wish we had one near here. Aperture is OK, actually it's great but only if you have a new Mac, you need a LOT of RAM and a fast processer to run it.

If you have an older MAC I'd try Photoshop Elements, it's pretty good and not so expensive.

I love sunflowers! I love how they follow the sun as it arcs across the sky.

Sunflowers make me smile....they are truly happy flowers. While they attract certain birds, the birds like to eat the center seeds. Happy Anniversary to your parents!

One of the prettiest farm fields I've seen was a huge field of sunflowers. Absolutely gorgeous!

We have an invasive sun flower, which adds colour to the hill zone. But they are not as big as the one shown here.

Nice close ups of them!

Nice sunflower pics!

I'm going to try to send you a picture of some baby bluebirds in a nest that you could use if you'd like.

What's your email so I can send the pic?

Belated Anniversary Congratulations to your parents Mel.
I have some gorgeous sunflowers blooming in my backyard now too and I will think of you as I view their happy sunflower faces looking towards the sun.

My parents are celebrating their 50th anniversary this November.

I love sunflowers! I have a plant that's about 10 feet tall, but I'm still waiting for the flower on it to bloom.
